in the second Birmingham half Marathon taking place on the 11th of October, getting to run your personal best and finding a date if you are single is a way to kill two birds with one stone. The Birmingham half Marathon is young, this is only the second run but it is quickly becoming very popular at attracting world class runners, this is due in part to IAAF upgrading it to a world championship run. This also means the event now attracts cream of long distance running with many well know international runners including British own number one lady of long distance running Paula Radcliffe expected to run.

Maria Sharapova first title after injury

Maria Sharapova won her first title since her lengthy injury lay-off at the final of the Pan Pacific Open Tennis in Tokyo. The 22-year-old Russian was leading 5-2 in the first set when Serbian seventh seed Jankovic was forced to withdraw with a recurrence of a shoulder injury. It handed Sharapova, who only returned to action in May, her first tournament win since April 2008.

After the match, a delighted Sharapova said “It was my second final of the year, so I was a bit nervous,” Sharapova said.

“It was very tough because Jelena started off so strong.” It was her fifth career victory over Jankovic in seven meetings.

Both players are former world number ones, but both have had a tough season.

Rio de Janeiro to stage 2016 Olympic Games

Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro will become the first South American country to host the Olympics games after after Jacques Rogge, IOC president announce the winner of the four competing city competing to stage the games in 2016.

Tokyo and Chicago were eliminated at the first round of voting, leaving Madrid and Rio as the final two cities. Rio won a majority of the 95 votes at the meeting in Copenhagen.

Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said after the announcement that “The world has recognised that the time has come for Brazil.”

Rio’s presentation to the International Olympic Committee delivered a passionate appeal for South America to be awarded the Games. President Lula told the delegates: “Rio is ready. Give us this chance and you will not regret it.”

“Rio will deliver an unforgettable Games. You will see for yourselves the passion, the energy and the creativity of the Brazilian people.”

President Lula said 2016 was an opportunity for the IOC to show that the Games belonged to people of all continents.

US President Barak Obama and his wife did support Chicago bid and were there in person to make Chicago’s case to host the games but issues between the US Olympics committee and IOC over TV rights may have contributed to Chicago’s early exit from the contest to stage 2016 Olympics.

Kevin Keegan wins £2 million damages against Newcastle United

Former Newcastle united manager Kevin Keegan was awarded damages of £2 million plus interest for winning a case he brought against his employers for constructive dismissal.
Keegan brought the case against his employer who sacked him because he did not agree with the signing of a footballer by the club. The panel agreed that in signing Uruguayan midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez, against Keegan’s wishes, the club were in breach of a term in his contract.
Keegan left Newcastle United, owned by businessman Mike Ashley, in September 2008. The club was without a manager for sometime after Keegan was sacked. There has been two managers after Keegan the last one being Newcastle legend Alan Sheerer who was in charge of the club last season when it was relegated from premiership. The club is now a championship club, the owner is currently trying to sell the club for 100Million but not buyers has yet emerged.
